In Love With Petits Grecs

These Greek vanilla cookies covered in icing sugar are called Kourabiedes and they come from Kavala. Their secret recipe is hidden in a sweet square package that looks like a vintage toy box. The origin of the recipe is from northeastern Greece, and specifically from the region of Kavala. This recipe is considered as the “authentic” recipe, and it is clearly the most famous and widespread. As one would expect, the recipe is based on “ancestral” raw materials: caramelized almonds, balanced amount of icing sugar, extra virgin olive oil and pure, fresh butter, which gives a sweet, rich and full flavor. Tradition becomes modern and develops into 4 different flavors! The vanilla flavored Kourabies is the absolute traditional one, cinnamon gives a great twist, anise is an impressive surprise, and finally the one with Greek coffee is the most brilliant expression of creative approach onto tradition.

The word kourabies has its roots in the words Kuru, which means dry, and biye, which means biscuit. It is most likely that the word originated from Turkey and made its way into the Greek language during the period of Ottoman rule.

Kourabies is considered to be a traditional Greek treat and a classic among all Greek home-baked goodies. Many regions claim the origin of the recipe and every place has its own version, which is proudly passes on from generation to generation.
